Economic or resource maps - feature the type of natural resources or economic activity that dominates an area. Cartographers use symbols to show the locations of natural resources or economic activities. For example, oranges on a map of Florida tell you that oranges are grown there.

Political maps - do not show physical features. Instead, they indicate state and national boundaries and capital and major cities. A capital city is usually marked with a star within a circle.

Today we will not work online. We will be using Wordle to transfer our ideas to the computer, so be sure to add a lot of details.

My Community unit extension
  1. We will read On the Day You Were Born By Debra Fraiser
  2. Draw a picture of yourself at home. Where is your favorite place to be? Is it your room? …your backyard? …the kitchen? …with your dog/cat? Draw your favorite things around you. Think about games you like to play, your family, your favorite sports or activities. Turn to your neighbor and share some of your ideas. Share some ideas with the entire class. SAMPLE WORD CLOUD attached

We will be creating word clouds next week that describe our favorite things and ourselves. Today we will use pencils to draw on our pictures and then color them in with crayons.

Technology Standard 2 – Produce Quality Work:
  • Presentation Tools (Kidspiration, PowerPoint, KidPix) - [in our case TuxPaint]
    • Communicate information by using a form of multi-media technology.
